Academic Policies

The academic program at Seattle Lutheran High School follows our mission which is to help students make and implement choices that reflect their highest calling. Students work closely with their academic advisors to design and implement an individualized course of study which will best prepare them for college and a life of Christian service.

COLLEGE GUIDANCE SERVICES Information and resources on colleges and careers, testing (SAT, ACT, TOEFL) registration and preparation, the FAFSA and scholarships are available on bulletin boards outside the library and at the college corner in the library. Miss Shirley Vradenburgh, Registrar/College Counselor assists students and families with post high school planning and the college application process. All seniors meet with Miss Vradenburgh during the fall quarter to discuss plans and/or begin the application process. An annual College Night is held in September. Junior and Senior students and their parents are encouraged to attend.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY members are selected by the faculty on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service to school and community, and character. Students who have a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA, are sophomores or above, and have attended SLHS for at least one semester are eligible and encouraged to submit applications for membership. The SLHS chapter of National Honor Society holds its annual induction ceremony for new members in the spring.

RELIGION is required all four years and is offered in four hour blocks once a month from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on teacher in-service days. Quarter credit will be given per year and grades are pass/fail.

GRADUATION POLICY
Seattle Lutheran High School offers two types of diploma. The state diploma requires that students meet the new Washington State requirements (2004) which include a culminating project (senior project). The second, and recommended, option will be a Seattle Lutheran High School diploma which will follow a college preparatory curriculum. The diplomas will be labeled as to their type. Students earning either diploma will participate in graduation ceremonies. Continuing with our past practices, students who have met all but 1.0 credit or less of their requirements, and have a plan and completion date for attaining it, will be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies and receive their diploma when their work is complete.

GRADES. Seattle Lutheran High School uses a 4 point grading scale. The comparison to a letter grade scale is:

A 4.0 C 2.0-2.2
A- 3.7 - 3.8 C- 1.7 - 1.9
B+ 3.3 - 3.6 D+ 1.3 - 1.6
B 3.0 - 3.2 D 1.0 - 1.2
B- 2.7 - 2.9 D- 0.7 - 0.9
C+ 2.3 - 2.6 F 0.0

GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA). A weighted GPA calculation is used to take into account both full credit classes and reduced credit classes. Classes given a Pass grade are not included in GPA calculations. The GPA shown on grade reports is calculated on the classes in that grading period only unless marked as cumulative GPA.

HONOR ROLL is calculated at the end of each semester using the semester GPA. The three levels of recognition are the Dean’s List (3.50 – 4.00), Honor Roll (3.20 – 3.49) and Honorable Mention (3.00 – 3.19).

REPORT CARDS. Grade reports will be sent home at the midpoint and the completion of each semester.

HOMEWORK / LATE WORK / MAKE-UP WORK. Quality and regularity of homework are major factors in learning and grades. Acceptance of late work is up to the individual teacher. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what work has been missed due to illness or emergency and to complete the work within teacher guidelines. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with their teachers before planned absences, including sports and other school related activities, for making up work. Student athletes who miss classes because of an athletic contest are allowed one day of extra time to make up work provided they make arrangements with their teachers prior to the event. If prior arrangements are not made no extra time will be allowed.

TRANSCRIPTS are updated at the end of each school year and are available by request from the school office. Students who leave school before the end of the school year will have transcripts available two weeks after officially leaving school.

SCHEDULE CHANGES may be requested by submitting the appropriate form to the school office. Requests will be reviewed by the Registrar as to graduation requirements and class availability.

REPEATED CLASSES Students must apply for approval to repeat a class in which they failed a semester or failed to meet a grade prerequisite.
