English – Humanities: (4 years required = 4 credits)

R English 9 – Composition and Literature (grade 9, 2 semesters) The foundation course in the English curriculum with a focus on critical thinking, reading, grammar and writing skills as well as on developing an appreciation for literature through reading and writing.

R English 10 – World Literature and Composition (grade 10, 2 semesters) A study of world literature, coordinated with the World History course to present broad themes chronologically and build respect for literary contributions of various cultures, past and present. Focus on reading comprehension, expository writing and analytical, creative group dialogue.

R English 11 – American Literature and Composition (grade 11, 2 semesters) A thematic, chronological study of American literary contributions, past and present; coordinated with the American History course. Emphasis on reading comprehension, expository writing, and analytical, creative group dialogue.

R English 12 – British Literature and Composition (grade 12, 2 semesters) A thematic and chronological study of British literary contributions, past and present, with emphasis on reading comprehension, mature expository writing, and analytical, creative group dialogue.

(R – Honors) English 12 – Honors – British Literature and Composition (grade 12, 2 semesters)

ESL ESL English (an alternative for international students) Builds confident, intermediate level English language skills, through a balance of listening, speaking, reading and writing development, with emphasis on the English grammatical system and vocabulary.

E From Script to Screen (2 semesters) A comparative study of several plays (mostly classics) and the films based on those plays.

E Creative Writing (1 semester) Students begin to develop their own unique styles in various writing forms and learn peer editing techniques and publishing opportunities.

E Speech & Communications (1 semester) Students learn to choose the best type of approach, method of organization, and presentation style for debate.
