Advanced Placement Program

What is the AP Program?
The Advanced Placement (AP) Program is a cooperative educational endeavor of secondary schools and colleges and universities. Through AP courses, high school students engage in college-level study; through the AP exams, students demonstrate and confirm their mastery of particular subjects.

Students are eligible to take any of the 35 AP exams in May each year, regardless of whether or not they took an AP class. Seattle Lutheran offers AP classes in each of the core areas as well as some electives. A sample of AP courses offered at Seattle Lutheran includes:

  • AP Calculus
  • AP English
  • AP United States History
  • AP Psychology
  • AP Comparative Government and Politics
  • AP Studio Art
  • AP Physics

AP Exams
For each AP course, an AP exam is administered at participating schools worldwide. Except for Studio Art, which is a portfolio assessment, all exams contain a free response section (either essay or problem solving) and a section of multiple choice questions.

An Overview of AP Exam Grades
Each AP exam grade is a weighted combination of the student’s score on the multiple choice section and on the free-response section. The final grade is reported on a 5-point scale:
5 = extremely well qualified
4 = well qualified
3 = qualified
2 = possibly qualified
1 = no recommendation

AP Grading Policy at Seattle Lutheran
All AP courses where a student earns a C or better at Seattle Lutheran are graded on a 5 point scale to reflect the rigor of a college level course. The weighted grade will be calculated into the student’s CGPA as follows.
A = 5.0
B = 4.0
C = 3.0

The purpose of Seattle Lutheran High School is to empower students to make and implement choices that reflect their highest calling.
